24 November 2017

Директор Кирилло-Белозерского музея-заповедника М.Н. Шаромазов выставку редкой иконографии, посвящённую образу преподобного Кирилла Белозерского, открыл в день  памяти святого - 22 июня.

The exhibition “St. Kirill Belozersky and Rare Iconography Variants” was officially opened in the People’s House of the Kirillo-Belozersky Museum-Reserve. M.N. Sharomazov, director of the Kirillo-Belozersky Museum-Reserve, noted greeting representatives of the museums, art critics and collectors, “Last year we determined the subjects of the exhibition of rare iconography variants where the image of St. Kirill Belozersky became the leading topic. Participants of ten museums (seven public and three private ones) and collectors are here today. Organization of any display is always hard work and responsibility. I would like to express gratitude to Elena Vinogradova, custodian of the icons in the Vologda State Museum-Preserve, and Elena Shchurina, research officer of the Kirillo-Belozersky Museum-Reserve, for installation of all exhibits. The catalogue of this display will be published by June 2018”.

All halls of the People’s House are filled with some kind of spirituality – there are 200 icons! “All collections are united with one thing – the presence of St. Kirill Belozersky. He is portrayed as a man who saves, gives some comfort, is close to everybody who is in front of him”, explained M.N. Sharomazov.

The display presents both individual images of the saint and his images in the two-figure and multi-figured compositions that have been restored for many years and are being exhibited for the first time!

St. Kirill is depicted together with the monastery that he founded or you can see him offering prayers in his cell in some icons. The rare image of the saint going up a ladder that is a part of the complex composition of the icon “Resurrection – Last Judgment” (1783) is of special interest.

The following icons are notable for the choice of the saints depicted in them: “St. Kirill Belozersky and St. Prophet Elijah” (17th century, private collection of Alexander Renzhin, its origin is probably connected with the Kirillo-Belozersky Monastery) and “St. Nicholas with Selected Saints in the Margins” (1670, from the collection of the Cherepovets Museum Association) where the ascetic is depicted together with St. John the Baptist.

The works from the collections of the State Museum Association “Art Culture of the Russian North” (the Archangelsk region), the Belozersk Regional Local History Museum, the Veliky Ustyug State Museum-Preserve for History, Architecture and Art, the Vologda State Museum-Preserve for History, Architecture and Art, the Cherepovets Museum Association, the Yaroslavl State Museum-Preserve for History, Architecture and Art, the Yaroslavl Art Museum, and the private collections of the Museum of Russian Icons (Moscow), the Foundation of St. Andrew the First-Called (Moscow), the Nevyansk Icon Museum (Yekaterinburg), and some collectors from Moscow, Yaroslavl, Saratov are being displayed in the Kirillo-Belozersky Museum-Reserve. Olga and Alexander Ilyin, Yuri Ignatiev, Vyacheslav Momot, Alexander Renzhin, Anatoly and Sergey Rudnev, Sergey Khodorkovsky, Alexander Lipnitsky, Andrey Boldyrev have also brought some icons from their collections to Kirillov.

“Four articles from my private collection are being presented here, including two very rare icons that belonged to famous collector Mikhail de Bouar (Elizavetin) who died several years ago. The icons from his collection are being first displayed in the Vologda region” said collector Alexander Lipnitsky.

The introduction of rare icons includes not only the images of St. Kirill – you can see the icons of other saints that are rare in the context of subject, stylistic and technical execution. For instance, the icon “New Testament Trinity” from the collection of the Veliky Ustyug State Museum-Preserve for History, Architecture and Art makes you think of the fact that the epoch of the 3D-format came long before the 21st century. It’s an illusion picture with an extant operating mechanism. This work of art was assembled of several thin plates fixed in the frame. When the angle changes, all of a sudden, you can see a new image that is regarded as a well-rounded one at a certain distance.

The exhibition “St. Kirill Belozersky and Rare Iconography Variants” will be open in the People’s House till August 18. Please, remember that it presents not only the icons - the saint’s image can be often seen in the articles of decorative and applied arts. The following items in the museum collection are notable for high quality of their execution: the icon “Troparion to Christ” (16th-17th centuries) and the sanctuary cross of the early 16th century on which the scenes “Old Testament Trinity”, “Crucifixion with Suppliants” and the figures of standing saints Sergey Radonezhsky, Kirill Belozersky, Gregory the Theologian and Nicholas the Miracle-Worker are carved with great artistic taste.

We look forward to seeing everybody who wants to touch the art in the People’s House on any day of the week from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Don’t miss a chance to see the exhibits from 10 museums and 11 private collections!

M.N. Sharomazov, director of the Kirillo-Belozersky Museum-Reserve, opened the exhibition of rare iconography variants on the commemoration day of St. Kirill Belozersky celebrated on June 22.
